Most Common Vasectomy Misconceptions

Mention the “V” word around some men, and all you will see after that is the back of their heads. There are so many myths and misconceptions about vasectomies, many men don’t even want to hear the word, let alone any explanations or additional information. That’s disappointing, since it is the most effective type of birth control. Stay seated, stay calm, and let us clear up the common vasectomy misconceptions.

Myth: A Vasectomy Is Painful

It does not hurt. There may be some minor discomfort, but there is certainly no pain. You will get numbing medication prior to the procedure, so there is virtually no pain. Think of a momentary pinch.

Myth: The Procedure Is Long

man holding sign that says vasectomy.Wrong again. This is one of the quickest outpatient treatments available. The procedure typically lasts 10 minutes, with very few sessions going beyond 30 minutes. In fact, it may take longer for the numbing meds to take effect than the actual procedure to be completed.

Myth: Getting a Vasectomy Will Affect My Virility

That is definitely not true. It has no effect on your libido, your sex drive, or your erection. You will be just as sexually active after the procedure as you were before the procedure. Cross that off your list. Some men even report a higher sex drive.

Myth: My Testosterone Levels Will Change

That’s not true either. Testosterone levels won’t change after your vasectomy. The procedure makes sure no sperm will mix together with semen prior to ejaculation. If your testosterone level drops, see our board-certified urologists because that means there may be a urological issue.

Myth: I Won’t Enjoy Sex as Much After the Vasectomy

Wrong again! In fact, it may be just the opposite. It might be more pleasurable since there will be no worries about unplanned surprise pregnancies.

Myth: I Can’t Afford to Take a Lot of Time Off From Work to Recover

That is really a misconception, a myth, misinformation, lie. Pick one. Recovery is super quick. Forget bedrest. Schedule the procedure on a Thursday or Friday and you will most likely be back Monday. In the case you have a job that requires a lot of lifting or straining, talk to Cleveland Urology Associates about your recovery time.

In either case, take some over-the-counter anti-inflammatory meds and keep an ice pack nearby. That’s it.

Take note: A vasectomy will not protect you from STDs should you have multiple partners. So use a condom.
