Is erectile dysfunction a warning sign of prostate cancer? It is unfortunate that although prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer in men, there are few if any early symptoms. Regular screenings by your doctor are the best way to head off the development of prostate cancer, but there are a few warning signs every man should understand and be aware of.
Don’t Ignore Screening Tests
Digital rectal exams and PSA blood tests are the best ways to stay ahead of a prostate cancer diagnosis. They may not be a pleasant experience, but regular check ups will give you a better chance for a positive outcome.
Watch For Urinary Problems
Any type of changes to your urinary system could be suspect. Look for changes in the stream, more frequent urination, stopping and starting or weakened stream, and having the urge to urinate at night.
Although less worrisome, don’t ignore any pain or burning during urination.
Blood In Semen Or Urine
This is an obvious sign of some issue. It might not be prostate cancer, but it should be addressed by Cleveland Urology Associates. A growing tumor can press on the urethra and lead to blood apparent in urine and semen.
Discomfort While Sitting
An enlarged prostate can cause issues and pain while sitting down. Although an enlarged prostate or BPH is non-cancerous, always make your physician aware of any new pain or changes.
If you begin to leak when laughing, sneezing, or coughing, be aware this can be a very early sign. A new onset of erectile dysfunction should also be discussed with your doctor.
When To Be Concerned
There are some specific symptoms which may be red flags for a growing tumor or advanced cancer outside of the prostate gland.
Talk with your doctor about any of the following symptoms:
- Weakness or numbness in your feet or legs due to pressure from the tumor on your spinal column
- Losing weight and having no appetite
- Fatigue, nausea and vomiting
- Problems with your bowels, especially constipation
- Deep pains in your groin, pelvis, lower back, and upper thighs
- Swelling in your legs
Of course there can be other medical reasons for some of these symptoms, so it is imperative that you seek medical advice for any of these signs.
Prostate cancer can be treated when caught in its early stages. Be aware of the symptoms of prostate cancer, and contact Cleveland Urology Associates if you experience any medical changes.
